Ways to increase visibility, impact, and citations of your published research

New ways of communicating scientific discoveries through open science platforms also known as academic profile platforms have emerged for storing, publishing, and disseminating research findings. Researchers as well as research institutions embrace open access and make research as accessible and as open as possible to increase visibility and impact.

What do these research(er) profiling tools do?

In the submission of annual progress reports, data on journal impact factors, citation scores, accumulative citations, article-level metrics, author-level metrics including altmetrics that quantify social media attention received by scientific work is extracted from Scopus, Web of Science,Dimensions, and other profiling tools (Baheti & Bhargava, 2017).

Strategies to Increase Research Visibility and Impact

There are a number of ways one can increase research visibility and impact:

These academic profiling platforms have an added advantage of openness and enhance research visibility and impact.
Scopus and Web of Science are global bibliometric data sources, search platforms, abstract and citation analysis tools widely used in the THES and QS rankings. The UP community has access to both Scopus and Web of Science through library subscription
By registering for an author identifier such as ORCiD to collect your body of research outputs under a consistent access point that will make it easier for others to identify your work and to use your research
Register for an ORCID account and import publications from Scopus
Set up and create a Google Scholar Profile
Register and create a Web of Science Researcher Profile and Scopus Author Identifier
Create a researcher profile using UP Research Data Repository (Figshare), find notes on how to create a research profile on Figshare, and share data openly.
Register in the African Scientists Directory then login and collaborate with others. Read more about the directory here
By using social research networks, e.g. LinkedIn, Research gate, Mendeley, Academia.edu, Blog, Research blogging, Tweet, ScienceOpen, Semantic Scholar Learn more about metrics in this video

- Web of Science Researcher Profile
- Log in on UP's Research Data Repository and create a Figshare profile account, follow the steps in this guide
