Guidelines

The Department of Library Services (DLS) supports the Open Access (OA) movement and encourages the use of Open Educational Resources (OERs), as well as the practice of using a variety of resources as course material. Where no relevant open access resources can be found, and textbooks are required, the purchasing of textbooks needs to adhere to the guidelines specified in this document.

Students are expected to purchase or have access to their own copies of prescribed textbooks. The purchase of prescribed textbooks is to provide additional access for UP students to learning resources. The DLS prefers to purchase material in electronic format to ensure access to prescribed texts independent of time and location. In line with this practice, purchasing prescribed and recommended texts follows two basic principles:

  1. Where an eBook is available on an acceptable DLS licence, it will be purchased in preference to purchasing a print copy
  2. Print copies will only be purchased where no eBook is available, or a specific need for a print copy is identified.
