Welcome to Access and Discovery

This page aims to assist you with the necessary information on how to access our University Library resources.  It also provides the  relevant information about some of our services, helping you to find what you've been looking for.

Below is a search box, that can be used to find any of our resources.

UP Resources

Prescribed books - Disclaimer

Please note that access to prescribed books is subject to availability. The library holds only one copy of each prescribed title, which may only be used when it is not currently used by another student. We recommend planning ahead, as access cannot always be guaranteed.

Book Holds

It is possible to reserve/hold an item that has been checked out to someone else. Use Discovery to place a hold on a specific item. Once the item is returned to the library, you will be notified via e-mail. Please pick up items as soon as possible after notification. Items must be picked up at the lending section of the library that was specified as the "pickup location" when the item was requested.

Open collection books can be renewed unless reserved by another library user. If a book is on hold it must strictly be returned on the due date.

If you need a book from one of the other UP libraries and it is not taken out – request it via Interlending (document request).

Please cancel holds if you do not need the items anymore via "My Library Account" or at the lending section of your home library.

Plagiarism Prevention

The purpose of this page is to inform and support all students and staff concerning anti-plagiarism. The University of Pretoria defines plagiarism as follows:

“Plagiarism is the presentation of someone else’s work, words, images, ideas, opinions, discoveries, artwork, music, recordings or computer-generated work (including circuitry, computer programs or software, websites, the Internet or other electronic resources) whether published or not, as one’s own work without properly acknowledging the source” [UP Plagiarism Prevention Page]

Training Sessions are offered by request or on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Borrowing of books

Your relevant student / staff / external user card identifies you for borrowing.
See the different categories for borrowing, access and privileges.
The Library reserves the right to shorten the normal loan period or to recall library material before the due date when the material is urgently required by other users. This will only be done if you have renewed more than once.
The borrowing privileges and e-access of any borrower (including interlending records and libraries) who fails to return items to the library or who fails to pay fines or costs owing, will be withdrawn or suspended.

See borrowing privileges under each category if in doubt.

BORROWING PRIVILEGES:

Only registered students may borrow these books.
The borrowing period is only two hours.
When returned late (even part of an hour) fines will be allocated to the student’s library record. A different fine structure is applicable for these books.

Borrowing History:

Please activate the borrowing history on your My Library Account for later reference. It will only be available from date of activation.
