African Studies

African and Black Diaspora: an International Journal [Taylor & Francis] (... a multi-disciplinary peer-reviewed international journal that seeks to broaden and deepen our understanding of the lived experiences of people of African descent across the globe by publishing theoretically and historically informed as well as empirically grounded works in the social sciences and humanities that are intellectually challenging and illuminating. The aim of the journal is to advance the analytical and interrogative discourse that constitutes the distinctive field of African diaspora studies in the production of knowledge by focusing on issues such as power, knowledge, gender, race and other forms of social identity. It seeks to encourage the study of the African diaspora through an inter-disciplinary and comparative framework that illuminates the state of the broad field in critical ways. The journal publishes research articles, commentaries and book reviews twice a year with a mix of regular and special theme issues.)

African Identities [Taylor & Francis] (... provides a critical forum for the examination of African and diasporic expressions, representations and identities. The aim of this journal is to open up various horizons in the field: to encourage the development of theory and practice in a wider spread of disciplinary approaches; to promote conceptual innovation and to provide a venue for the entry of new perspectives. The journal focuses on the myriad of ways in which cultural production creates zones of profound expressive possibilities by continually generating texts and contexts of reflexive import. African Identities accepts the following types of article: original articles, book reviews.

With an emphasis on gender, class, nation, marginalisation, "otherness" and difference, the journal explores how African identities, either by force of expediency or contingency, create layered terrains of (ex)change, decentre dominant meanings, paradigms and certainties. Important questions about the meanings of Africanness, "post-coloniality" and syncreticisms, for example, provide conceptual frameworks within which to situate the critical analysis of African cultural production and the axis of engagement with popular culture.)

Communication, Journalism and Media Studies

Ecquid Novii: African Journalism Studies [Taylor & Francis] (... aims to contribute to the ongoing extension of the theories, methodologies and empirical data to under-researched areas of knowledge production, through its emphasis on African journalism studies within a broader, comparative perspective of the Global South. AJS strives for theoretical diversity and methodological inclusivity, by developing theoretical approaches and making critical interventions in global scholarly debates. The journal's comparative and interdisciplinary approach is informed by the related fields of cultural and media studies, communication studies, African studies, politics, and sociology.

A wide definition of journalism is used, which extends beyond news and current affairs to include digital and social media, documentary film and narrative non-fiction.

Manuscripts dealing with the intersections between journalism, politics, culture and society as these pertain to Africa and comparable regions in the Global South are especially invited. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to: the political economy of journalism; global flows and contraflows of journalistic content and capital; journalism and social change; journalism and cultural identity; freedom of the press; journalism ethics; theories of journalism; journalism education and research; changing journalistic practices and norms. In the larger context of global flows, the journal considers the Atlantic as part of wider networks, a space of exchange, and an expanding paradigm beyond the limits of its own geography, moving beyond national, regional, and continental divides by examining entangled histories and cultures. It aims to critique and reconstruct theories by interfacing them with one another and by relocating them in new sites and conjunctures. This reconceptualisation of critical theories is achieved by:

The journal fills this analytical gap with fresh, objective and intellectually provocative research and also offers a forum for the cross-fertilisation of ideas and for reasoned and rigorous debate between the academic and policy communities in the North and South.)

Readers go to Critique for critical essays on new authors with emerging reputations. We now consider “contemporary” literature to be by any author who made their career in or after the 1950s. Our focus is on adult or literary fiction in the form of novels, short stories, hypertext, and graphic fiction, originally published in or available translated into English. While we do not publish essays about theory, we welcome theoretically informed approaches to contemporary fiction; the essays we publish draw on existing scholarship and emphasize the analysis of contemporary fiction.)

Current Writing: Text and Reception in Southern Africa [Taylor and Francis] (...is published bi-annually by Routledge. Current Writing focuses on recent writing and re-publication of texts on southern African and (from a 'southern' perspective) commonwealth and/or postcolonial literature and literary-culture. European Journal of English Studies [Taylor and Francis] (...presents work of the highest quality in English literature, linguistics and cultural studies from the multidisciplinary and multicultural perspective that characterises the study of English in Europe. Rather than producing miscellanies of essays from across the disciplines, the aim of the journal is to publish substantial scholarly and critical interventions, from a variety of perspectives, on chosen themes, and thereby to influence the agenda in its disciplines. A research journal, written by and for specialists from all parts of the disciplinary spectrum of English Studies in Europe and beyond, EJES is also addressed to academics interested in the dialogical and plurivocal development of their subject and in innovative work outside their own area of expertise. To this end, it also offers non-specialists examples of recent approaches and new ways of conceiving and engaging the field of English studies. The journal places a high premium on readability, discussion of controversial issues, and the inclusion of a wide range of disciplinary, cultural and theoretical perspectives.

Pronounced 'edges', EJES appears three times a year. Individual issues are devoted to specific themes, proposed by guest editors, and designed to attract cutting-edge research from across and between the disciplines that make up English Studies in Europe and beyond. Themes should therefore be designed to invite as broad a range of interpretations as possible. EJES does not normally publish volumes of conference proceedings, however we are prepared to consider proposals so long as an equal opportunity is given for contributions from scholars who did not participate in the conference. A substantial book review section keeps readers informed about new publications in the field. 'The cause is Europe . . . The cause is also English Studies in the broadest sense of that term . . . Moreover, the cause is debate.' (Editorial, EJES 1.1). The full EJES editorial policy can be found below.)

African Security [Taylor & Francis] (... explores fresh approaches to understanding Africa’s conflicts and security concerns. Its investigation of competing analytical approaches to security complements discussions of current security issues in Africa. The journal strives to investigate the myriad issues relating to conflict and security within and between African nations, not only from the more traditional approaches to security studies but also from more novel and innovative perspectives. In order to truly understand conflict in Africa, existing paradigms in national and international security must be challenged. African security cannot be understood by applying only traditional theories and approaches to the study of international security, and to this end African Security seeks to push the envelope of traditional security studies while remaining firmly grounded in the extant security issues facing Africa. While African Security is based in the disciplines of political science, international relations, and international security, it welcomes theoretical challenges to how we understand conflict and security drawn from the perspectives of other disciplines, such as anthropology, development studies, environmental studies, and economics.

Research

Accountability in Research [Taylor & Francis] (is devoted to the examination and critical analysis of practices and systems for promoting integrity in the conduct of research. It provides an interdisciplinary, international forum for the development of ethics, procedures, standards, policies, and concepts to encourage the ethical conduct of research and to enhance the validity of research results. The journal welcomes original work on advancing research integrity in the form of empirical research, conceptual assessment, and critical analysis in all fields of science, including biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, law, economics, statistics, management studies, public policy, politics, sociology, history, psychology, philosophy, ethics, and information science. The journal seeks to publish research that makes a significant contribution to the literature and advances knowledge of accountability and integrity in research. With some exceptions, the journal is not interested in publishing studies that merely duplicate previous work or are limited in generalizability (e.g., due to problems with statistical design or research focus) or that do not meaningfully contribute to the scholarly literature.)

Action in Teacher Education [Taylor and Francis] (Action in Teacher Education is published as a service to members of the (US) Association of Teacher Educators and people concerned with teacher education. Articles focus upon concepts, practices and research that offer implications and applicability for practitioners involved with teacher education. Though the primary audience is national, international studies that make clear connections to a wide range of teacher education programs are welcome. Thematic and non-thematic issues are published. Articles focus on pedagogical innovations and reports of empirical research and conceptual essays.)

Action Learning: Research and Practice [Taylor & Francis] (... will publish articles which advance knowledge and assist the development of practice through the processes of action learning. Articles should aim to create theory, grounded in empirical observation of data and experience, that widens understanding of action learning and research in professional and organisational settings. Papers should encourage practitioners to gain new insights into their work and help them improve their effectiveness and contribution to their clients and the wider community. This journal is grounded in the approach pioneered by Reg Revans which holds that there can be no learning without action and no knowing without the effort to practise and implement what is claimed as knowledge. Because action learning promotes the creative integration of thinking & doing, theory & practice, academic & practitioner, contributors are asked to strive to hold these often diverse perspectives together. An important question in assessing papers will be: “Is this likely to help people in the further development of their practice in working with people, organisations and communities?”

(...) focuses on research that considers discourse and interaction in settings where activity is deliberately organised to promote learning. While most papers focus on the discourse of classrooms, others report research in more informal, naturalistic settings in which, while learning is certainly still taking place, it is not occurring in the typical and ‘traditional’ space of a classroom. Examples include online tutorials, peer-peer interactions of work-in-progress, and dialogues between ‘trainer and trainee’ in a workplace context.

In order to deal with the range of phenomena identified in the Journal’s wide interpretations of both ‘classroom’ and ‘discourse’, contributions are invited from across the range of theoretical perspectives and research methods. Thus, articles are welcomed which use such perspectives as ethnomethodology, conversation analysis, discursive psychology, multimodal analysis, systemic functional linguistics, genre theory, studies on ‘voice’, identity studies, critical discourse analysis (CDA), sociocultural theory, cultural-historical activity theory, communities of practice, linguistic ethnography and linguistic anthropology, and poststructuralist discourse analysis. (...) The Journal invites contributions from researchers working in any educational setting, in any subject, at any educational level, anywhere in the world. Work reporting on international and inter-disciplinary research is especially welcome.)

Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies [Taylor and Francis] (... publication of the National Communication Association. CC/CS publishes original scholarship that situates culture as a site of struggle and communication as an enactment and discipline of power. The journal features critical inquiry that cuts across academic and theoretical boundaries. CC/CS welcomes a variety of methods including textual, discourse, and rhetorical analyses alongside auto/ethnographic, narrative, and poetic inquiry. The journal especially invites essays that are intellectually innovative, reflexive, and relevant to democratic concerns in their examination of culture and communication. CC/CS promotes critical reflection on various areas (...).)

Communication and Democracy [Taylor and Francis] (... publication of the National Communication Association. Communication and Democracy welcomes the submission of manuscripts that engage areas of research that include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • the study of values and practices connected to the “freedoms” typically associated with the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment: freedom of expression, assembly, the press, association, and religion;
  • communication-based analyses of the establishment and maintenance of democracies;
  • rhetorical studies of political institutions, elections, political parties, legal and judicial discourse, and civil society;
  • communication-based analyses of democratic practices, theory, and culture;
  • communication-based studies of social justice activism that contributes to democracy and/or democratic life;
  • examinations of democracy and democratic practice in varied contexts (e.g., the workplace, media institutions, the military).

Comparative literature--East & West = Bi jiao wen xue--dong fang yu xi fang [Taylor & Francis] (... a peer-reviewed open access journal that publishes research on all aspects of comparative literature. Conflict, Security and Development [Taylor and Francis] (...provides an analytical and empirically informed treatment of the linkages between issues of security and development in contemporary international relations. It places emphasis on the need to examine issues of security and development in their mutual interaction rather than as separate areas of academic enquiry and policy-making.

...bridges traditional development and security studies through its focus on cross-cutting policy agendas, and also establishes connections with related disciplines, including anthropology, political economy and regional studies. The journal fills this analytical gap with fresh, objective and intellectually provocative research and also offers a forum for the cross-fertilisation of ideas and for reasoned and rigorous debate between the academic and policy communities in the North and South.)

Contemporary French and Francophone Studies [Taylor and Francis] (...publishes the latest and best production of those involved in the field of 20 th and 21 st century French and Francophone studies, whether academics, novelists, poets, artists, filmmakers, photographers, or philosophers, to name only those. In the process, the journal aims to reflect the increasingly interdisciplinary direction taken by the field and by the humanities in general.

...is published five times per year, with four issues dedicated to specific themes and a fifth issue, the “Open Issue,” accepting submissions on a full spectrum of issues. We encourage submissions from a wide range of contributors from across the disciplines, ranging from established academics and personalities to graduate students and non-academics. Contemporary Levant [Taylor and Francis] (... is an international peer-reviewed, multi disciplinary journal of the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL), a British Academy-sponsored institute. The journal aims to foster research agendas that engage with and reflect current and emerging issues in the region. With the aim of maintaining a balance between empirical research and theoretical developments, the journal welcomes scholarly contributions from various disciplines including: anthropology, sociology, politics, religion and theology, cultural studies, modern history, social geography, media, film studies and literature.)

Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies [Taylor and Francis]

Critique: Studies in Contemporary Fiction [Taylor and Francis] (...Since its inception in the 1950s, Critique has consistently identified the most notable novelists of our time.

Culture, Theory and Critique [Taylor and Francis] (...interdisciplinary journal for the transformation and development of critical theories in the humanities and social sciences. It aims to critique and reconstruct theories by interfacing them with one another and by relocating them in new sites and conjunctures. This reconceptualisation of critical theories is achieved by:

  • assessing how well theories emerging from particular spatial, cultural, geographical and historical contexts travel and translate into new conjunctures;
  • confronting theories with their limitations and aporias through immanent critique or application to specific social, political or cultural phenomena;
  • interfacing theories from different intellectual, disciplinary and institutional settings.

Given its interdisciplinary character, Culture, Theory and Critique will appeal to anyone working at the interface between disciplines such as anthropology, critical geography, critical race and ethnic studies, cultural studies, ecology, gender, sexuality and queer studies, historiography, literary theory and criticism, film studies, media studies, philosophy, postcolonialism, science and technology studies, social and political theory and visual culture.)

Works of the past and near-past must be assessed and evaluated through the lens of current reception.

Submissions are double-anonymized peer-reviewed by at least two referees of international stature in the field. The journal is accredited with the South African Department of Higher Education and Training.)

The field of journalism studies is understood broadly, as including the practices, norms, value systems, frameworks of representation, audiences, platforms, industries, theories and power relations that relate to the production, consumption and study of journalism. A wide definition of journalism is used, which extends beyond news and current affairs to include digital and social media, documentary film and narrative non-fiction.

English Studies [Taylor and Francis] (...For more than a century, English Studies has been one of the defining publications in the field of ‘English’. Unique in the range and quality of its coverage, it attracts contributions from leading scholars worldwide on the language, literature and culture of the English-speaking world from the Early Medieval period to the present day. The foremost position of English Studies in many of these areas is widely recognized by its international readership and its listing in the Clarivate Analytics Arts & Humanities Citation Index®

(T)his peer-reviewed journal (...) combines a healthy respect for tradition with a keen interest in the latest innovative approaches.)
