Welcome to the Jotello F Soga Library.

With this guide, we intend to provide effective and efficient information support to students, lecturers and researchers at the Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria.

Services offered

  • Access to globally available academic information in the form of a vast number of scientific databases, e-journals, e-books and other printed, electronic or digitised information resources
  • Access to all recommended textbooks if commercially available, in collaboration with lecturers
  • A balanced collection of information sources within financial constraints
  • Group and individual training sessions in information literacy skills
  • Information literature searches or information on any other request within two working days of receiving it
  • Advice on the availability and accessibility of information resources
  • Advice on the application of reference techniques, plagiarism, copyright and Endnote
  • Advice on relevant issues in the information environment that have an impact on learning, teaching and research
  • Advice on evaluating journals and where to publish
  • Advice on evaluating, filtering and analysing information (bibliometrics)
  • Advice on research visibility and impact (altmetrics)
  • Library reference pages for ClickUP modules
  • Circulation of library material according to applicable loan rules
  • Interlibrary loans and document delivery

Printing, photocopying and scanning are outsourced to Konica Minolta. Photocopying facilities are provided in the library. Load credit onto your student card at the self-help machine on Level 2 of the Arnold Theiler Building. You will be required to use a PIN to access the credit in future.

Clients have access to 12 computer workstations in the library. These can be used for access to the Internet as well as access to the library’s online resources and Students Online. The Faculty's IT lab is situated in the Sir Arnold Theiler building and consists of a Large Lab with 181 PCs and a Small Lab with 82 PCs.

All the student computers in the library can be used to watch audio-visual material. Please bring along own earphones.

Study or group discussion facilities in the Jotello F. Soga Library:

Seating: 80 seats are available in the library for study purposes

Study cubicles: Five study cubicles are available for study or research purposes

Seminar room: The seminar room is located next to the open collection on level five of the library. It has recently been refurbished and equipped with modern technology and includes a computer, scanner, plasma screen and large whiteboard. The seminar room may also be used for group discussions or study purposes

OP Research Commons: The OP Research Commons is situated on the 5th level of the Sir Arnold Theiler building. This facility is for the use of researchers, specifically Masters and Doctoral students, with a view to strengthening the university’s capacity for research and postgraduate success. The facility is equipped with a study and work area, seminar room and relaxation area.

Research Commons on the Hatfield and Groenkloof campuses

The Research Commons (Hatfield) is a dedicated advanced space for fully registered Masters, PhD postgraduates, Postdoctoral Scholars well as UP Staff. It combines research and social space that contributes to social dialogue, scholarly exchange and        intellectual development. The space includes work stations, study carrels, seminar and group discussion rooms equipped with top-end PCs, WiFi connectivity, printers, scanners and copiers. A separate lounge area provides for relaxation.

The Research Commons at Groenkloof consists of: 72 Work stations in the Research and Writing Room of which some are equipped with desktop computers while others are equipped with power points/network points for the use of laptops/notebooks. WiFi connectivity. This facility includes a Seminar Room, Group Rooms, an auditorium and a lounge area with water and coffee machines and seating
