The library subscribes to journals that are print only, online only and some that are available in print and online. Many online journals are open access for which no subscription is required.
Print journals are kept on level 4 and are arranged in alphabetical order according to the journal title. Print journals can be located by doing a search in the WorldCat Discovery Service.
E-journals may be electronic versions of print titles, or may be published in electronic format only. However, electronic journals (e-journals) still follow the same format as print journals, i.e. they still have a journal title, a volume, an issue, a year of publication, and often still also have page numbers. Each journal article will have one or more authors, and an article title. Access is available from any device that has an Internet connection. You will be prompted to authenticate yourself by entering your student or staff number and portal password.

There are two approaches for using e-journals:
Search the full title of the journal or the journal article in the library catalogue WorldCat Discovery
If we have access to the e-version of the journal, an “access journal” or a “view full text link” will enable you to download a PDF copy of the article.
If a journal is only available in print format, the physical location of the journal will be indicated.
Do a topic search in one of the library databases. A list of core databases in Veterinary Science appears on the Veterinary Science library’s webpage.
Instead of doing a search in a specific database, a search in the library catalogue WorldCat Discovery will also enable you to find journal articles on your topic. Choose this option if you do not intend to do a very inclusive search on a topic but are only interested in a few relevant articles.
WorldCat Discovery helps you find information with one simple search interface – physical, electronic and digital material. You can locate physical items such as print books, theses, print journals and audio-visual material in your library and discover book chapters, e-books, e-journal articles etc. with one search.
The result list not only includes material from UP libraries, but also libraries worldwide. UP library results will always display at the top though.
You can refine your search results with different filters e.g. journal articles to exclude other material.
Searches produce direct links to e-resources or indicate the availability of a print or physical resource. You can use the “View full text” link to access these e-resources. You will be required to log in with your University of Pretoria student or staff number & portal password when off-campus.
Important note:
When limiting your search to a specific branch library of the University of Pretoria libraries, like Veterinary Science, only physical items housed in the library will be retrieved. If you want to include all electronic material and databases in your search, only limit to “University of Pretoria”.
If your search retrieves items not located in any of the UP libraries or for which you cannot get electronic access, it can be requested through our interlending service.
